Notes from Martin

  • video art ---60's!
  • not like tv or film....translate audio/visual w/ analogue or digital code
  • can be easily manipulated
  • Vilem Flusser- video as "dialogical memory"
  • can be self reflexive
  • Jacques Derrida- video art must be considered in relation to conventional artistic language
  • -Decolage- created through an aggressive act (coined by Vostell)
  • -1960s rise of televised art galleries......The Medium is the Medium
  • 70's!.....digital media...editing
  • 90"s!........no mre magnestic tapes.... now data sets
  • '97 sony/canon- 1st digital camera
  • the medium is always changing b/c of new tech

Stop Motion Proposal

For my stop motion I plan to explore empty space. I want to show spaces that are inhabited my many people on a regular basis so that the lack of people seems odd. To achieve this I will use the camera as the eyes of the viewer so that it is almost like looking at a ghost town.

Favorite Stop Motion...

Favorite ART VIDEO!!!!

Lynda.com notes

  • FCP interface--Final Cut Pro
  • Library holds event folders that hold project folders
  • diff. between event and project---event is where you store media, projects of same event, & project is what you actually edit the video in-----one sequence only
  • audio skimming--shift s
  • play pause- space bar
  • fxn left/right-end of clip
  • new thing?
 -new event- under file/right click-name
-import media under file
-ORGANIZE MEDIA!!!!----outside final cut
HUD- heads up folder- can see where media is created
  • change the clip appearance with the light switch button
  • b-roll
  • navigation-------
  • i/j-start
  • o/-end
  • l-fast/forward
  • k-pause
  • slow motion- hold k, do j,l----for exact audio
  • 4 types of editing tools-------key strokes
  • for favorites- F key/ drag to soundbites
  • for favorites- F key/ drag to soundbites
  • Duration--ctrl D
  • undo- ctrl Z

Lynda.com Notes

  • Resolution is how detailed the image is...how many pixels
  • Pixel- the unit to measure the image resolution
  • HD is 1080x720....important....don't crop video
  • 1080 HD -video image 1920x1080 pixels & 720 HD is 1280x720 pixels
  •  camera's mega pixels camera does not relate to resolution of the video of camera
  • 1080 video = image size ~ = 2 megapixels & 720 video image size ~= 1 megapixel
  • video frame rate- 30 frames/sec.......used to be 24
  • for slow motion- need more frames to be smooth -about 60
  • shutter speed in video diff from pictures
  • high shutter speed-freeze frame-noisy
  • 1/25 -simple movements......higher the speed weirder the look
  • 1/30 - 1/90 is good
  •  ideal shutter speed is 2 times the frame rate
  • manual exposure!
  • when using RAW be more careful with exposure
  • blinking light- checking correct exposure
  • use the histogram
  • check f-stops
  • good iso-100 to 400, maybe to 800
  • wide f-stops for limited depth of field?  cut  light & get a neutral density filter
  • zoom lenses are NOT fast
  • when shooting wide open with fast lens
